the physical and chemical properties
sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (cmc-na) is a white to light yellow powder, granular or fibrous substance. it has strong moisture absorption and is easily soluble in water. when neutral or alkaline, the solution presents high viscosity liquid. stable to drug, light and heat. but the heat is limited to 80℃, above 80℃ for a long time heating, viscosity is reduced, insoluble in water.  its relative density is 1.60, and the relative density of the thin section is 1.59. the refractive index is 1.515. it is brown when heated to 190 ~ 205℃, and carbonized to 235 ~ 248℃. its solubility in water depends on the degree of substitution. insoluble in acids and alcohols, does not precipitate in salt. it is not easy to ferment, and has great emulsifying power to oil and wax, and can be stored for a long time.
there are two main classes of products, alkaline and neutral, according to the different uses. the basic, industrial low viscosity (2% aqueous solution) is 0.2-0.5 pa·s; the viscosity (2% aqueous solution) was 0.3 ~ 0.6pa·s for industrial use and 0.8 ~ 1.0pa·s for industrial use.
